John combines a passion for innovation and a commitment to open collaboration with wide-ranging industry knowledge to help the University make the best use of IT in support of its mission in education and research.
John led the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Techologies at Cambridge from 2003 to 2015. Prior to that he was a serial entrepreneur, setting up medical devices companies in the US and Europe. An engineer by training, John worked in the steel and oil industries (which included a time in the Algerian Sahara) before an MBA at INSEAD and a stint in technology strategy consulting at PA. From PA he moved into business start ups, the most successful of these was Summit Technology Inc, which went public at $200Million after just 18 months and later sold to the Alcon division of Nestle for $900Million.
As well as his like of gadgets and new technology he enjoys sailing and has competed in the Fastnet race.
