The workstrands were set up and introduced in April 2014. With the first phase of activities now complete each workstrand has completed a draft report with a summary of their outlined rationales and remits.
The Workstrands were established to consider what the UIS will need to achieve in order to deliver on the recommendations of the IT Infrastructure and Support Review (2013).
The established workstrands, with a summary of each rationale and remit
- Workstrand one, Services and Review, reviews the high-level needs of all main customer communities, to develop a service led strategy for providing Information Services to the University.
- Workstrand two specialises in Community and Capability to engage a more collaborative IT community. The group will recommend what resources; knowledge, skills and support will be required to develop a federated service model.
- Workstrand three’s remit is Operations, including capability development and external/internal governance. The rationale states the group will develop procedures and processes for the overall efficient operation of the UIS department.
- Workstrand four, Architecture, focuses on the standards for future services provided in the new organisation, looking at outcomes and areas for consideration.
- Workstrand five concentrates on Build Capability and Methodologies, to identify, catalogue and compare existing analysis, development, project management and quality assurance methods in use throughout UIS and implement the best of these for future approaches.
- Workstrand six focuses on Service Operations, to identify, catalogue and compare existing Service and Operational management assets & methods (including network, data centre, and helpdesks).
- Finally, Workstrand seven specialises in Information Policy, Assurance and Asset Management/Exploitation. The group develops recommendations for appropriate information security, retention & sharing approaches for Cambridge.
Feedback was sought on the workstrands findings from colleagues across the University via firstname.lastname@example.org or the forum at https://forum.cam.ac.uk/viewforum.php?f=40 by September, but responses throughout that month were also welcomed.
The next steps will consist of workstrand reports, recommendations and feedback to be considered by the UIS Interim Leadership Team and proposals will then be made to the Information Services Committee (ISC) in the Michaelmas Term.
