UIS facilitates Examinations with Adjustments

26 April 2017: UIS provides the University’s Board of Examinations with a bespoke desktop solution for enabling students with additional needs to sit their exams using a computer instead of handwriting their answers.

UIS manages Examinations with Adjustments (DS-Exams) in its MCS rooms on the New Museums Site each year, however, the system is also available to any Institution with UIS-managed MCS Windows machines, and can be easily rolled-out. It only requires the Institution to provide a dedicated MCS Windows workstation and an examination invigilator.

The Examinations with Adjustments service was originally created by the University Computing Service (UCS), over a decade ago. Three years ago, the Examinations with Adjustments service underwent extensive improvements to allow utilization of existing MCS infrastructure to ensure the high availability and security of the system. For the past two years, the DS-Exams system has been run live in the Phoenix 1 and Titan rooms during the examination period between 26 April and 16 June.

The DS-Exams service comprises three elements: dedicated MCS Windows workstations to run the service, the UIS-developed examinations application used by students, and the Invigilator control panel.

Students use a bespoke Word 2016 document template, and their files are auto-saved every 2 minutes to dedicated examination file servers. The system also provides a full audit trail.

Contact the if you are interested in using the service at your Institution.
