January 2017 update

The room booking application was delivered to two departments in September 2016. Since then they have been providing the project with some amazing insights and feedback.

The minimum viable product (MVP) version of the room booking application (v1.0) was delivered to two departments in September 2016. It provided basic room booking capabilities, such as the ability to find rooms, check room availability, book rooms and manage your room bookings. Since then, the departments have been providing the project with some amazing insights and feedback.

Based on the feedback, we have developed a new release (v1.1) of the application that offers a much-improved user experience (UX), and includes additional functionality that enables recurring bookings and email notifications. This release was implemented in December and we’ve already had some very positive feedback.

We are now looking at the next steps needed to productionise the application and improve the capabilities in the area of room management. This will focus on how to make a room administrator’s job easier – either by providing them with better information to help them make better decisions about a request, or by automating some bookings that meet a set of business logic or criteria. We’ll also be improving the management information and reporting capabilities in order to provide the University with insights into room utilisation and usage, which could help the University to plan and build better teaching spaces in the future.

We are working with the Sidgwick site to help us model the business processes and rules that will allow the application to be rolled out on a University-wide basis. We’ll investigate issues such as sharing teaching and meeting room space fairly, out-of-hours operations and approvals. The hope is that if we can provide a solution that fits Sidgwick, it should scale up to the whole of the University.

The project team is happy to discuss the room booking application with any department interested in adopting the system, and can provide a demonstration of its capabilities. Please contact Chris Thornhill, who will arrange a meeting.
