Room booking

The University needs to improve the use of its space, as we currently sit at the bottom of the “Teaching Space Utilisation” league table. Having numerous room booking systems in place across the University makes the operation and efficient use of space very difficult. Many rooms sit empty whilst some departments struggle for space for their teaching needs.

To address this, UIS is currently developing a University-wide Room Booking solution. The Room Booking Project will implement a Room Booking solution that can be used and adopted by all parts of the University.

The project will place the users’ needs at the forefront of the design. The solution delivered will be highly intuitive and will not require users to attend a training course or read a user manual before using it. All actions will be obvious to the user, and any additional guidance that might be needed will be built into the system and delivered via tool-tips and online help.

The University benefits from this project in several ways. By using the information in the room booking system we will be better able to plan future building projects, as well as being able to encourage better and smarter use of existing space. Additionally, due to a Government initiative, there is growing pressure on Universities to strive for a 20% improvement in their carbon foot print by 2020. This project will help to enable the University to achieve that target.
