A new round of Bright Ideas celebrated at UIS

The second set of Bright Ideas campaign winners received their prizes at a low-key presentation event at the RNB on Friday 12 August.

Based on the principle of ‘crowdsourcing’, the project uses the Ideascale online platform to gather ideas from users across the University. Following the successful pilot campaign, the Bright Ideas team launched two campaigns: one focusing on how to use IT collaboratively to build a more-integrated IT community; and the other an ‘open mic’ free-for-all for any ideas that might benefit the University.

The two winning ideas came from Eva Rybicki (ebr23), Administrator for the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, and our own Loren Miles (ltm29) at UIS. Eva proposed greater use of YouTube-style video clips for in-house training – for example, on administrative systems such as CHRIS and CUFS. She noted that many staff prefer visual-based learning techniques, and that video clips are a practical alternative to tutor-led training sessions.

Loren suggested that UIS Reception could become a centralised information hub for people needing expertise from somebody else in UIS. The reception team would investigate and find an answer to a query, and in the process learn more about the teams in UIS and what they do. While presenting prizes to the innovative winners, Martin Bellamy praised both ideas as excellent examples of using technology and our colleagues’ expertise to benefit the IT community as a whole.
