University training: the next generation

The University Training Booking System (UTBS) received a major upgrade in September, including a facelift, mobile responsiveness and efficiency improvements requested by end users.

UTBS imageThe UTBS is the University’s enterprise system for centrally publishing, finding, booking and administering training events across multiple University training providers. The personal development training attendance history for students, researchers and staff of the University is managed through the system.

UIS completed a very successful major upgrade of the UTBS in September 2016 with less than one minute of downtime.

Monica Gonzalez, the UTBS's service owner, commented "The new development will significantly improve the user experience. It represents an extensive facelift to the site, making it more consistent with the University style and more mobile-friendly. It also improves searching, timetabling and course presentation, and introduces integration with the University Map. In addition, we've made improvements to administrative processes in response to requests from training providers, which should make their lives easier and increase efficiency. I'd like to congratulate Dean Rasheed on his commitment and development work on the project. We’ve already received very positive feedback."

Siobhan Hoffman-Heap from the Social Sciences Research Methods Centre (SSRMC) said: "The UTBS is fundamentally important to our annual programme. Without it, we'd be unable to deliver courses that are taken by students from across the entire University. Through effective consultation and discussions with stakeholders, it now offers the same powerful tools, but with a sleeker, fresher look, in line with the University's Project Light house style.

"Administrators can easily schedule and advertise multiple events and series with greater ease, and you can get reports for an event (or a whole programme) with a few clicks of the mouse.

The newly updated system will make a significant difference to the number of students booking our courses.

"Students and staff booking courses via the system also have a much simpler experience with booking pages that focus on the important content. These pages have customisable content, directions to the class venue, alternative course dates (just in case students are unable to attend their preferred course), and a way of automatically adding training sessions to their calendar.

"In short, we're confident that the newly updated system will make a significant difference to the number of students booking our courses, and eagerly look forward to hearing from the UIS as to further developments in the future."

Last year, the UTBS enabled more than 10,000 staff, students and researchers to find and book places on over 2,000 training courses provided by the University. More details on the UTBS can be found on the University IT Service Catalogue.
