January Updates

December Updates

The Cyber Security Programme and the TechLink Community joined forces to host Cyber17, a cyber security awareness symposium. The event attracted over 200 IT officers across the University who enjoyed presentations from a variety of international and high profile information security experts. 

UIS Chief Information Security Officer, Vijay Samtani opened the event and explained as one of the largest Universities in the world, we have a huge responsibly to keep secure.

Emma W from the National Cyber Security Centre explained how "people are the strongest link to be a first line defence in security". Cisco’s Talos’ Martin Lee gave an insightful view of how threat actors can compromise our systems and GDPR expert Merike Kaev from the Estonian Ministry of Justice warned IT staff that "reporting a breach is not just a technical decision, it’s a legal one which must be informed by an understanding of data protection law".

It was fantastic to also have representation from Cambridge University law graduate, Vesselin Popov’s, Development Director at the Judge Business School Psychometric Centre. Vess highlighted the worrying vulnerability of social network users.

Attendees also enjoyed interactive workshops discussing security prevention methods such as patching and configuration management.

The grand finale’ of the symposium was presented by Sophos’ virus expert Paul Ducklin who performed a live hack demonstration of Malware and showed how easy it is for “the crooks” to hack our network.
