SharePoint Online service launched

January 29 2018: A new self-service SharePoint online service is now available to Institutions participating in the University's EES Agreement. Institutional IT staff have delegated admin rights to create (and delete) SharePoint Online sites for members of their institution.

SharePoint Online is a powerful collaboration platform, that will be of interest to close-knit teams and distributed communities who need to work closely together and share information. Anyone with a Microsoft account can be added as a member of a SharePoint Online site, which makes it a useful tool for research groups collaborating with external partners.

The new service gives institutional IT staff delegated administration rights to create and delete SharePoint Online sites for their users, at no additional cost. The licensing fees are included under the University's Microsoft EES Agreement.

The service offers cost-saving opportunities for institutions currently running their own SharePoint on-premise servers; it is cloud-based, so there are no servers to own and maintain, and no additional software to license fees.

IT staff will find the service quick and easy to use, with new SharePoint Online sites going live around 60 seconds after the online set-up procedure is complete. Full documentation is available.

UIS is providing this service for people who are already familiar with SharePoint administration and use. We will provide technical support for the site creation/deletion process, but will not be offering extended technical or end-user support at this time.

We are, however, interested to find out whether there is demand for SharePoint consultancy and training for IT staff within the University. UIS' Relationship Managers will be canvassing feedback so that we can explore options for providing solutions to meet any requirements captured.
